Check Out The Korg Koass Pad - Only $399.99

Keyboard Gear

Powerful sampling tools and performance effects at your fingertips.

The Korg KP3 lets you use and abuse realtime effects and sampling by touching, tapping, and sliding your fingers on the revolutionary KAOSS pad. The combination screen/touchpad interface and KAOSS technology make it intuitive, immediate, and just plain fun to use. It's a complete instrument and processor allowing you to manage, recall, and play back samples; sample on the fly; and add dynamic processing to any audio signal or to the samples themselves.

Korg has given the KP3 exclusive effects algorithms, synth sounds derived from Korg's RADIAS engine, better sampling, and computer connectivity. It comes with 128 programs in filter (16), EQ (2), modulation (12), compressor (2), LFO (25), delay (16), reverb (6), grain shifter (5), looper (13), sample effect (7), sample bank crossfade (4), drums (6), synthesizer (10), and vocoder (4) categories. A new pad lighting system places 64 individual LEDs in an eight by eight grid under the pad, providing visual cues as to the current program, held position, etc.—it can even scroll a custom message across the pad!

Killer Effects come to Life
The KP3 comes equipped with 128 great-sounding effect programs. Sure, the traditional essential effects are there—delays, flangers, etc.—and they sound amazing. But using newly developed algorithms, the KP3 also provides fresh, exciting effects such as a grain shifter, decimator, a vintage analog style filter with a tone-bending drive circuit, and expanded EQs that are controlled directly from the pad. And moving beyond effects, there are also drum grooves and even RADIAS-inspired vocoder and synthesizer sounds that can be played free-form on the X/Y pad.

As you move your finger across the touchpad and find that "sweet spot," pressing the Hold button will lock the settings, so you can take your hand away to do other things. The LED grid on the touchpad will show the held location, so you can pick up where you left off without any "jumps". Better yet, Pad Motion can memorize and repeat a fluid or complex gesture played on the pad. Once again, the new pad lighting system enhancements can actually display the Pad Motion pattern as it plays.

A separate FX Depth knob sets the overall balance between the original signal and the effect, so you can add just the right amount of processing. The eight Program Memory buttons allow you to store all of this information Program Number, Hold button On/Off status (and coordinates), Pad Motion, and the FX depth setting to a single button for instant access during performance.

Another new innovation in the KP3 is called FX Release. Basically, FX Release adds an adjustable delay tail when you remove your finger from the pad. In addition to being a creative performance tool, FX Release also prevents the abrupt dropping out of the effect as you transition from one setting to another, providing a smoother and more musical performance. The FX Release delay effect is automatically set to the current tempo whether manual, MIDI, auto BPM or Tap Tempo and the amount of the FX Release and can be set and saved individually with each program.

Superior Sampling
Four Sample Bank buttons on the front panel allow you to create, play and save both looped and one-shot samples on the fly. All samples are recorded using high resolution 24-bit converters, and are stored in 16-bit/48 kHz format. Samples can be saved on a Secure Digital (SD) card or transferred to computer via USB. With both mic and line inputs, the KP3 allows you to sample from a wide variety of sources.

The KP3's sampling system thinks and speaks in the language of music, hiding incredible technology below the surface. When creating loop samples, for example, sample length is set in terms of beats, not seconds. You can generally set the sample length up to 16 beats long (extremely slow tempos capture fewer beats). When sampling is finished, the sample will immediately start playing in sync with the sample source. As the sample plays you can adjust the start time of the sample to "fine-tune" it to the original tempo, or to dial-in time shifted playback.

Time-Slicing chops a sample into separate parts. You can use the Program Memory buttons to turn these individual slices on or off in real time, creating new rhythmic patterns from the original sample as part of your performance. Sampling and effects are totally integrated in the KP3, so you can sample through the effects, and even resample the entire output to create powerful, multi element samples.

Stay in Sync
Tempo is an integral element of the KP3. Sampling times are set in terms of tempo, and many effects are also tempo-based. All tempo-related functions are accurate to .1 (one-tenth) of a BPM for more precise matching to external devices. To keep everything sync'd up, the KP3 features auto-BPM detection from the audio input; Tap-Tempo entry, as well as a manual tempo setting. The KP3 can also send and receive tempo information via MIDI clock. This extra versatility allows the KP3 to detect BPM info from a turntable, and in turn provide MIDI clock to other devices down the line, keeping everything moving together.

Take Control
The KP3 is also a MIDI controller, sending out three controller numbers from the touchpad, and additional messages from the slider. The Sample Bank buttons send and receive note messages. Program Change commands and clock information can also be sent or received. The inclusion of MIDI IN and OUT allows even the most daring and complex KP3 moves to be recorded and played back by an external sequencer or software sequencing program.

Part of the Team A single USB connection allows the KP3 to share sample data with a computer. An editor/ librarian program is included so you can build libraries of samples, and edit them using your computer. The software also allows WAV and AIFF files to be loaded into the KP3, and includes pitch correction for samples not created at 48 kHz. This graphic software is valuable not only for editing samples, but also for creating, editing and saving programs and global data. The stereo inputs and outputs can be set so the KP3 can run in-line to an amplification system, or hooked to the effect loop jacks of an audio mixer.

The keys on my keyboard have started to stick. How do I fix this?

Having a sticky key that won’t rise properly, or rises up slowly can certainly be frustrating. You might try gently moving the key from side to side being very careful not to break the key. This may help reposition the key guide bar underneath the key. Keys that are sticky and/or slow can sometimes be caused by bent key guide bars. Key guide bars typically get bent when a key is hit at an angle or something has been dropped on it. In these situations, I always recommend that a qualified technician evaluate the keybed to properly diagnose the problem. Many times, the culprit of a sticky key can be narrowed down to a cold beverage spill.

What is an analog synthesizer?

A synthesizer with analog-based circuitry. These synthesizers, in general, use analog-style units (oscillators, filters) that are controlled by voltage (like the old modulars, only pre-wired). Analogs are known for having a warm, pleasing sound, compared to most digitals.

Early analogs, such as the Minimoog, are easily called that: they all have what is called discrete circuitry (transistors, resistors, etc. - no integrated circuits). Later synthesizers, however, used other, more compact analog technolgies such as op-amps and linear integrated circuits.

In the early 80s, the terminology began really getting distorted when synthesizers came out with separate sections controlled by digital technology (for things such as patch memory). Often the oscillators themselves would be controlled by some digital circuitry, to help keep the oscillators in tune. Instead of having VCOs (voltage controlled oscillators), they are often referred to as having DCOs (digitally controlled oscillators). And things got complicated even further by having synthesizers that have oscillators driven by short, looped samples, but have analog filters! (These synthesizers are often called "analog hybrids".)

What is a modular synthesizer?

The earliest synthesizers made were not made in a self contained unit like the modern day synthesizer is. Each unit, instead, was self-contained in an individual box (a module, hence the term "modular"). Units were available that both created a signal (VCOs, noise generators) and processed a signal (VCF, VCA, etc.). These modules were mounted in large racks and connected to each other with 1/4" cables. Because you patched together connections with these cables, a particular sound was called a "patch"... and the name has stuck with us to this very day.

These modular synthesizers were usually very big, sometimes taking up entire rooms. Compared to the portable keyboard, a modular synthesizer seems like a burden... until you realize that with a modular synthesizer, you are not restricted to one particular path. Modular synthesizers have the greatest freedom in terms of composing patches, and for this reason they are still used in the studios of film composers and studios that require the ability to make new sounds.

The Buchla and Moog modular synthesizers were the earliest to enter the commercial marketplace; although the Buchla technically was the first, the Moog remains the most famous, for two reasons. The first is that the Moog synthesizer got noticed through the enormously popular release of "Switched On Bach" by Wendy Carlos. The second is that the Moog modular synthesizer defined the standard which all analogs use to this very day: All functions of the synthesizer are controlled by a control voltage (CV) of one volt per octave.

Nowadays, a new type of modular synthesizer is emerging: A virtual modular synthesizer. This modular synthesizer allows you to create the sound on a computer, using virtual "patch cords" and "modules" that synthesizer a very similar sound to a modular, without all of the bulk and cables.

How many keys should be on the keyboard if I would like to get one for rock music?

Keyboards come in different sizes because people have different needs. There is no rule that classical players must have 88 keys, and there are many rock musicians who play keyboards with a full 88 keys. It just depends on what you're comfortable with, and what your specific needs are. Standard pianos have 88 keys, so if you are playing a lot of piano parts, in whatever context, 88 keys are usually preferred.

Editing Synthesizer Presets

Editing the presets on your synth or creating new sounds from scratch can instantly extend your instrument's musical potential. Most modern keyboards' sounds come from sample waveforms that are "burned" onto a chip and stored inside your synthesizer. These sounds are usually sampled in professional recording studios, so most synth samples are very similar in quality. These samples are massaged by your synth's filters, amps, envelopes and LFOs to create distinct presets. Factory presets differ because manufacturers' sound engineers program according to their own ears. If you don't program your own sounds or editing the presets,. you end up with the sounds that the programmer put in. These are great sounds, but they may not be exactly what your music calls for. Every synth has its own unique qualities. If you'd like to edit your sounds, you should seriously consider the synth's interface. You are more likely to learn how to program your synth if the interface is easy to navigate and user friendly. Some synths also offer sample expandability, which allows you to add new sampled waveforms for more sound power. Making good use of effects is also very important in creating great sounds. If you just want to make music, and don't want to worry about editing or creating your own sounds, you're still in luck. You can purchase cool custom sounds for just about every synth made.

Yamaha MOTIF XS6

Yamaha MOTIF XS6 Music Production Workstation

Yamaha MOTIF XS6 Music Production Workstation

The Yamaha MOTIF XS6 is a powerhouse 61-key workstation with 355MB of wave ROM to inspire your creativity and performance recording with four intelligent arpeggiators and over 6000 phrases to instantly capture your musical ideas. The integrated sampling sequencer can be expanded up to 1GB of memory for creating complete MIDI/audio productions. Studio style mixing and VCM effects from the Yamaha DM2000 let you master your music right on board. Firewire and Ethernet computer connectivity and a special Yamaha version of Steinberg software- Cubase AI expand your possibilities. With the large color LCD and 8 knobs and sliders for hands on control, making great sounding music has never been easier.

High-Quality Sounds to Spark Creativity
The MOTIF XS keyboard provides an exceptionally broad selections of realistic sounds to spark your creativity thanks to a massive 355MB of high-quality onboard waveforms and samples. A single voice can have up to eight separate sound elements, enabling composite sounds of remarkable complexity and nuance. Among the standout voices is a resonant, meticulously recorded concert grand piano sound that is practically worth the price of admission by itself. New acoustic piano, electric piano and orchestral samples - not to mention the richly textured and distinctly electronic synthesizer waves - give you the sonic tools to fully realize virtually any style of music and any instrumentation.

The Expanded Articulation (XA) tone generation system allows the eight available elements to more effectively recreate realistic sounds and natural performance techniques such as legato, staccato and key release sounds. The elements are common to acoustic instruments but have always been difficult to realize on electronic keyboards. XA also allows you to assign elements to on/off panel switches and change sounds within a voice in real time.

Intuitive Interface
Despite all of the advanced technology and wealth of features packed tightly into the instrument, the MOTIF XS is exceptionally intuitive and easy-to-use. It gives you a large, full-dot color LCD that lets you see multiple parameters at a glance and has clear, high-resolution graphics with virtual sliders, knobs and more.

The main panel on the MOTIF XS provides an amazing level of control and flexibility. Eight knobs and eight sliders let you instantly tweak a variety of parameters and effects as you play. The eight knobs are especially versatile, letting you use the knobs to independently control eight different parameters (out of 24 selectable parameters,) or use them to control a certain effect setting for up to eight different parts. The knobs can also be used to change the rhythmic feel and other settings of arpeggios and patterns while they play back. Two assignable function buttons give you added control over the sound of the Expanded Articulation Voices, letting you change sounds within a voice in real time.

Other convenient operation features include the improved category search function, which is now organized with dual categories that help you find the voice you want. Calling up the guitar category for instance gives you acces to the dual sub-categories such as: Acoustic, Electric Clean and Electric Distortion. The mega arpeggio voices also have their own dual category for easy selection of those unique voices.

Computer and Software Integration
A full-featured music production synthesizer in every way, the MOTIF XS6 digital piano comes equipped with a variety of connectors and interfaces for virtually any application and any studio environment. This includes assignable outputs, A/D inputs, S/PDIF digital output, MIDI, ethernet, and mLAN. The comprehensive set of connectors makes interfacing with computers and your favorite software exceptionally easy.

The Yamaha MOTIF XS is designed to work seamlessly and transparently in your computer-based environment. The remote control mode lets you control your DAW software right from the panel of the MOTIF XS. For example, starting and stopping playback/recording can be done with the special transport buttons and changing track levels and parameters is a cinch with the sliders and knobs.

Yamaha MOTIF XS6 Music Production Workstation Features:

* New UI and 8 knobs and sliders
* Large color LCD
* Xpanded Articulation Synth engine
* 355 MB of wave ROM
* Studio style mixing environment
